You know the type- the annoying workmate that smiles even in the morning, lends you two helping hands when all you asked for was one, continually makes the day better and makes you forget you wish it were over. I’m surrounded by the type-turkey’s every one of them.12279013_10208140762667012_8713307563898335197_n (1)

http://www.aclib.us/headquarters(link-a-dink to the Alachua County Library district.)The main, Headquarter’s branch is a big deal building, housing over 250,000 items, visited by 3,000 people on a slow day and checking out over 1 million items per year.

Sometimes, I just have to put one foot in front of the other and drag myself in to work with our rafter of Youth Service people. Imagine the whole flock being made up of people who like to help others on a daily basis, and it only gets worse. These liberrians( from the often used pronunciation, most seem to think we grow on trees.) like to share information, read, laugh, smile-never yell-stay pleasant, think proactively, design endless displays, tell stories during elaborate story hours presented throughout the county, and they like to nibble. Real Gobblers this group. In fact, I think we should call one table inside our office the official, Nibble Table-wait, the entire office-The Nibble Office. Better. In all, it’s a disgusting display of happiness around here-a nightmare montage of good feelings I must navigate through every working hour!

This is giving me an idea…..

images (23) Ya know how we have all those happy days like Thanksgiving, the Holidays(code for Christmas) Thank God for Parents day(wait-do we have one of these?) Anyway….what we need around here is an official crappy day -a cathartic day of the year, one left open for only complaints, grips, groans, pukey ideas, grumbling and saying what’s on our mind day. We could call it, The Colossal Crappy Day. But why stop at one, when we could have, say,,, four a year?!?!?!

Right now,  what’s amazing is that this post has nothing in it that even closely resembles what I meant to write about. No, this post is about the Library building I put on display, how much awful fun it was creating, and how many patrons regrettably enjoy it.12195848_1049487265082047_5704119365050262721_n

So yeah, it’s like a doll house, you can even find stacks of books and stuff by looking into the side windows or into the second story window.12191492_1049487311748709_2641903970150508098_n

Have trees, have squirrels*(God’s motto.)…Well,  one thing’s certain-this squirrel’s not the only one who has a bunch of nuts around him.

red team winners

I ask you! Who are these people!

And my director(she’s really my supervisor, but, shhh, don’t mention that to her) keeps thinking of more to do, more to eat and stuff.1965012_786280751406619_7639099478551129472_n

She keeps an eye on me.

And really, all the gals I work with wear a bunch of hats on a daily basis- it’s that do this, do that, get stuff done attitude they all don that screws up many perfectly good, non-productive days.

11111600_10207006062780224_3249618924229311604_n

Personally, I have to ask, why so many hats? It’s only one job!?!?!

securedownload (8)

I’m your basic one hat sort of guy, period. (Pay no attention to the stuffed animals, puppets, clown shoes, tinsel or that other hat on my desk.)

securedownload-7 (1)

Okay, also pay no attention to maybe a second hat, or four, or the Grinch, the moose, the royal carriage, and the winged Pegasus you can’t see to boot. There, that’s as far as I take it-the rest is all hard work; end of story-sorta. Let the others do all the miserable laughing.

Merry Thanksgiving anyway, and enjoy the turkey’s-I do.

the lake from above

the lake from above-

The scene was so beautiful– one sunset gave a deep teal blue water-color, all lined in black by  High Rock, trees, hills, with a blazing red stripe that span across the whole western skyline, and above, as if an icing on a red velvet cake, whisk a band of turquoise blue. Soon, that enchanted blue gave way to a deepening, darker sky that grew to reveal the first stars of the night.

This isn't the exact shot....no where near red enough---but somehow I've lost 36 pictures taken this fall at the lake during a transfer from my camera to computer--drat!

This September had been a warm one with lake temperatures in the high seventies, the air full of breeze that fluttered leaves partly turned but for the Swamp Maple already ablaze with yellow, red and gold.

This bulletin board came form my lake, 'Happy Place'.

This bulletin board came from my Lake, ‘Happy Place’.

restful moments abound

restful moments abound…*

There was no way to suspect a two-day rain would soon drop the water to seventy-though three days after that storm, on our day to depart, warmer weather was coming to continue a sun that could heat any dock by afternoon.

I ran across the dock joined by two grandsons, seven and six, and cannon balled  splashing waves to either side. Sometimes, I even wore a suit.

I’d always thought, as do my family, relatives and friends, that being up at the Lake makes me feel good, food tastes better, I sleep soundly, and a plop in the lake before breakfast ends any fuzzes from the late night before. This dip is sound advice-the refreshing dunk makes any weather better. But, as it turns out, there’s more to the Lake than the scene, the water, the loon, the rocks, trees, hills and grassland-for us and for so many, it is a place of family, and seemingly a million options when it comes to enjoying the Lake with relatives.

“I love the Lake!” How many Lake Bonaparte lovers have said those words?!?!? Scads, zillions, bunches of happy people. “Food taste sooo good up there!” Mouths stuffed with fresh fish, Croghan Baloney and New York Cheddar  smile to say the words.

I simply accepted the truism all my life that it felt great to be at Lake Bonaparte! There was never any question, and I didn’t need to ask my cousins about the fact, either.

Boom! Another year, another shot of a cyclopean family gathering at Lake Bonaparte.

Boom! Another year, another shot of a cyclopean family gathering at Lake Bonaparte.

But, after 66 years of visits my mind in a random way started wondering exactly why it felt so good to be at the lake. Of course, there’s the beauty of the place-enough to bulldoze any problem away in a sunset of a second.

From our half-way dock in Porter's Bay

From our half-way dock in Porter’s Bay

And, there’s the people-family, loved ones, friends. Plus, ya just can’t leave out the relaxed atmosphere it seems people hang out in most of the time while up at the lake.

Still, I needed something a bit more tangible-why was I so happy at the lake, so bouncy up and down our set of sixty steps from the cabin to the dock below? How did staying up to see the Northern lights and then getting up early to fish work? At home, I often crawl in and out of bed, but I’ve a lawn to mow, bushes to trim, toes nails to cut and light bulbs to change at home. Maybe all that work weighs down the days at home? But Wait! I’ve boat loads of work to do at the lake-lawns to mow, trees to chain saw, docks to clean and treat-heck, often an entire year’s maintenance for the lake house is crammed into a two-week visit! Of course, I’m not working at my job while at the lake, and vacation has a way of making a fella feel good. Nah, none of those calculations added up to fishing, boating, rowing and bounding up stairs-having that superman feeling I enjoy experiencing while up at the Lake..

I may have found one secret to Lake Bonaparte’s all invasive power, it’s lure, like a plug to a fish, one underlying undeniable truth about the lake’s energy. It’s all about…..the air.

Right, taking in the air at the lake is akin to  walking into an oxygen tent. Breathing in at Lake Bonaparte zings the body full of new life. Fact-the air at Lake Bonaparte has 95% less hazardous air pollutants than the national average air American’s breath day in , day out! It figures the air is filtered by the Adirondacks, the largest track of free range land America has left.

It all makes perfect sense: pure air leads to clear minds, better smelling, tasting, maybe thinking, more energy and a happy feeling.  Wow and whew, I couldn’t believe the stats on the air when I stumbled across these findings…Enjoy the figures-

These findings over a 365 day period.

Harrisville                              New York City                    National

Air quality index 31 43                               50
Pollution index 230,538 9,468,840            5,072,052

The Harrisville, NY air quality index is a median value which considers the most hazardous air pollutants. The Harrisville, NY air quality index is 27.5% less than the New York average and 37.6% less than the national average.

The Harrisville, NY pollution index is the sum of the most hazardous air pollutants displayed in pounds. The Harrisville, NY pollution index is 97.6% less than the New York average and 95.5% less than the national average.

Air Pollution Information for Lake Bonaparte/Harrisville area

Pollutant Total
Arsenic 0.000%
Benzene 0.004%
Carbon Tetrachloride 0.001%
Lead 0.000%
Mercury 0.000%

So it all adds up, but this is to take nothing away from all that is Lake Bonaparte! What a mind-blowing place!!!

Boom! I’ve been wanting to do this river and water fall on a bulletin board for a long time. I’ve tossed the possible design around for over a year. At last, the river flows, and the water falls!

The falling water is made of strips of highly reflective blue foil paper, silver tinsel and and see through, multicolored floresent wrapping paper. I put blocks of white foam board at the bottom to created the white splash of falling water.

But the board is more about zipping through adventure as you roam the collection of any library.

It's fun to zip around a library.....

Now, just who might be zipping through the youth services department’s collection. I found a few likely suspects.

The over-all view is fun!

I’d be happier if the library’s web page address was more visible. At the time, black seemed right-what a clunker of an idea. It’s still possible I might redo that in a brighter color….@www. aclib.us…. For sure the squirrel mascot I use in every board is missing…he’ll be floating on a raft-type boat in the water below the river by sometime next week….

This is what people see if htey look left as they walk down the stairs into our youth services department

This is what people see if they look left as they walk down the stairs into our youth services department

This board was challenging to string up! I’m happy with many aspects of the scene. The crumpled look of the grey rock comes across as I hoped it might and gives some credence to the idea of a water fall(I think). Some one asked me how long the board took to put up. The answer is almost five years-that because some parts of it, the wood steps and the black trees, have been used in boards over and over throughout that length of time. In fact, the reflective green grass blades have been used in countless displays and in puppet show sets for over eight years-so yeah-eight years… Nothing comes easy, but many things can be used in many different ways. For me, the fun in the planning, doing the design work, working to put it all together as a scene, and then hearing what people think about the board when it’s all finished are equally as refreshing. Call me loving it.

Here’s to adventure in your local library. Zip on by and have fun! BTW here’s a link from Cnn that pictures some beautiful libraries—and lists some amazing facts about their collections.

So yeah, sometimes the wind impresses me as much as anything nature has to offer. Wind. A soft , gentle breeze that lifts the hairs on my skin ever so slightly as it blows by, or evaporates the sweat off my body without notice is so refreshing-comforting.

Strong winds are amazing. I’d hang outside as a kid until the last possible minute to feel the winds of approaching hurricanes. Then, I’d play outside with my friends during the time the eyes of hurricanes passed over head.  I suspect this is because of life insurance policies my parents and my friend’s parent had out on all of us, but we didn’t think about that as we stomped through puddles and climbed newly fallen trees, balancing on their trunks and swinging through their branches. Funny, to this day, I still  remember the shock of finding a huge weeping willow tree down on its side. In truth, I still love that tree. The wind had taken it away, forever.

I often hang wind chimes outside our house. I guess I think of their chiming as the wind’s song. Rustling leaves, moving shadows, shirt tails flappin’ and tall pines whispering-nothing else is like the wind. This winter I felt the wind and remembered the willow from my childhood. I thought about storms, crunchy leaves rambling across streets and how my long hair used to blow across my face in the wind. Ha! My hair is gone now, but the wind remains forever-

I decided to try to capture the movement of wind on my winter bulletin board. Honestly, I hope I got close to capturing the feeling of wind on my board-just to share  my love for the wind, and all it does. And, of course, there’s reading in the wind….(click on the pictures for a better, bigger view.)

Anyway,,,the wind makes me feel like I’m home again. This lyric is from a song I wrote in the 1970’s. The wind is in her name, the title of a tune I wrote in the 1980’s. It’s always been about the wind with me, though who could ever keep from looking up at the stars? Not me, and to think, there are windy nights.

Bye, for now.
